Drölling was born in 1752 in Germany and later moved to France, where he became a prominent portrait and genre painter during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture human emotions and expressions. This particular painting is especially interesting, as it includes a painted frame as an integral part of the artwork.

The original painting measures 18 x 14 3/4 in. (45.70 x 37.47 cm); Framed: 26 5/8 x 23 1/4 x 3 in. (67.6 x 59.5 x 7.6 cm) and is in the collection of the LACMA, Los Angeles County Museum of ART.
